A section from the InterAgency Journal discussing the activities of the State Department in Southern Sudan following that country’s transition to independence. In particular, the work of State’s Civilian Response Corps (CRC) is detailed. The CRC utilizes experts drawn from nine different agencies with experience in more than two dozen countries. Their work in Southern Sudan includes the mitigation and prevention of conflict, strengthening relationships between the U.S., the new government and civil society on all levels, stabilization and state-building, and the development of an inclusive, democratic government that is accountable and responsive to the needs of its people.
