Multi-agency exercise prepares for nuclear incident

In early May, the Department of Defense (DoD) hosted a multi-agency exercise to prepare agency experts to respond to home-grown terrorists and a nuclear incident. The Nuclear Weapon Accident Incident Exercise (NUWAIX 2015) took place at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor in Washington state, and was led by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA).

Exercise participants included the assistant secretary of defense for nuclear matters, as well as representatives from U.S. Northern Command, U.S. Coast Guard, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Departments of Energy, Homeland Security, and Agriculture, among others.

The three-day exercise was designed to enhance the cooperative efforts of federal, state and local response agencies, and replicated an incident involving a U.S. nuclear weapon in DoD custody at a military base in the continental United States. A comprehensive after-action review of the exercise will be available later this year.
