Announcing ‘call for papers’ for 2011 CGSC Faculty Interagency Writing Competition

The CGSC Foundation’s Col. Arthur D. Simons Center for the Study of Interagency Cooperation is conducting its second annual CGSC Faculty Interagency Writing Competition.  The deadline for the précis for papers in this year’s competition is April 15.  The deadline for submitting completed papers deadline is Sept. 1.

Resident or extension faculty members of the Intermediate Level of Education, School for Advanced Military Studies and the School for Command Preparation are eligible for the competition.  Interested faculty members should submit a 300-500 word précis summarizing their subject and approach by April 15.  The submission can be in email or hard copy.  Send entry précis to rbarret@thesimonscenter.org , by mail to The Simons Center, P.O. Box 3924, Fort Leavenworth, Kan., 66027, or drop it by the Simons Center office at 655 Biddle Blvd.

The Simons Center will notify those entries selected for submission no later than April 22.

Topics can be broad or specific and examine any aspect of interagency cooperation, coordination or collaboration at the operational and/or tactical level.  Some examples include: The Impact of State Department’s QDDR; Interagency Planning Procedures; Interagency Cooperation/Collaboration at the Geographic Combatant Command Level; The Interagency at Work in Iraq or Afghanistan; S/CRS and the Military; Civilian Response Corps; Military to Civilian Transitions; and Interagency Issues in Domestic Disaster Response.

Submitted papers must be original manuscripts based on research, first-hand observation, or lessons learned from personal experience and should be 3,000-5,000 words in length, not counting endnotes.  A bibliography is not required. Papers should include a short biography of the author. Previously published papers, or papers pending consideration elsewhere for publication, are ineligible.

Winners will be announced in Fall 2011 during the Command and General Staff College Golden Pen Awards Ceremony.  First place will receive an engraved cut glass plaque, an award of $250 and their paper published by the Simons Center.  Second place receives a $200 award and consideration for publication.  Third place receives a $150 award and also consideration for publication.
