DHS opens VOICE office for victims of crime

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) launched the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Victims of Immigrant Crime Engagement (VOICE) office on April 26. The VOICE office will assist victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants, and is intended to keep victims informed of the immigration proceedings of suspects.

President Trump announced the office in a speech to Congress earlier this year, saying that the office would provide “a voice to those who have been ignored by our media, and silenced by special interests.” VOICE is also part of an executive order aimed at combating illegal immigration, and is meant to carry out Trump’s immigration enforcement policies.

The creation of the VOICE office has drawn criticism, with critics citing multiple studies that show immigrants are less likely to commit crime than native-born U.S. citizens.
