Agencies respond to Hurricane Maria

U.S. government agencies continue response and recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Maria. Personnel from various federal departments and agencies, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Departments of Defense (DoD) and Health and Human Services (HHS), are focused on life-saving and life-sustaining efforts in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Last week, FEMA and the U.S. Coast Guard conducted urban search and rescue operations throughout the Caribbean, and FEMA pre-positioned food, water, and other supplies in preparation for the response. Disaster declarations for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands were also issued as a result of the destruction brought by Hurricane Maria.

Over 300 HHS personnel are providing medical care to those affected, while the EPA is addressing drinking water and wastewater management concerns. HHS and DoD, with the support of FEMA and the American Red Cross, are working to conduct medical evacuation, set up mobile hospitals, and reopen hospitals that are without power. DoD has also worked to reopen the port of San Juan, re-establish the mobile communications tower, transport supplies, and continues search and rescue operations.
