White House releases new Space Policy Directive

The White House released a new policy regarding the protection of U.S. space systems on September 4. Space Policy Directive-5, or SPD-5, focuses on space systems that enable communication, navigation, weather monitoring, and other capabilities vulnerable to cyberattacks.

“Through establishing cybersecurity principles for space systems, Space Policy Directive-5 provides a whole-of-government framework to safeguard space assets and critical infrastructure,” said Deputy Assistant to the President and Executive Secretary of the National Space Council Scott Pac. National security advisor Robert O’Brien followed, saying “Cyber security does not stop at America’s terrestrial borders.”

Building off of the 2017 National Security Strategy, Space Policy Directive-3, and the National Cyber Strategy of September 2018, SPD-5 lays out five cybersecurity principles for space systems aimed at supporting infrastructure, developing cybersecurity plans, collaborating to promote best practices, utilizing best practices, and making appropriate risk trades.
