Announcing The Simons Center Faculty Writing Competition for 2010

The Colonel Arthur D. Simons Center for the Study of Interagency Cooperation is dedicated to fostering and developing scholarship in interagency affairs that enhances education and discourse at the Command and General Staff College while facilitating broader and more effective cooperation within the U.S. Government at the operational and tactical levels.

Pursuant to this purpose The Simons Center is seeking original papers examining any aspect of interagency cooperation, coordination or collaboration at the operational and tactical levels of conflict.  Topics – broad or specific – may include, but are not limited to:

  • The Joint Interagency Coordination Group (JIACG)
  • Provisional Reconstruction Teams (PRT)
  • Impact of National Presidential Security Decision 44 (NSPD-44)
  • The Interagency at Work in Iraq or Afghanistan
  • S/CRS and the Military
  • Civilian Response Corps
  • Expeditionary Economics
  • Interagency Governance Creation
  • Economics Development w/Interagency Partners
  • Interagency Professional Development
  • Interagency Components of Mission Command
  • Advanced Civilian Team Integration
  • Civil-Military Planning
  • Military-Civilian Transitions
  • Historical Perspectives of Civ-Mil Cooperation

Who is Eligible?

Command and General Staff College faculty members supporting CGSS, SAMS and SCP courses at Ft. Leavenworth or satellite campuses during 2010 can participate.

How do I Enter?

  • Submit a one-page (300-500 words) précis summarizing the subject and approach by 1 July 2010 to The Simons Center via email or in hard copy with a CD.  Email: rbarrett@TheSimonsCenter.org.  Mail: The Simons Center, PO Box 3924, Ft. Leavenworth, KS 66027.
  • Those selected for submission will be notified 15 July 2010.
  • Final deadline for full paper is 1 Oct 2010.
  • Submitted papers must be original research or lessons learned from personal experience and should be 3,000-5,000 words in length, not counting endnotes.  A bibliography is not required.
  • Papers should include a short biography of the author
  • Previously published papers, or papers pending consideration elsewhere for publication, are ineligible.

What do Winning Writers Receive?

First Place: Award of $250 and publication as a Simons Center Occasional Paper.
Second Place: Award of $200 and special consideration for publication.
Third Place: Award of $150 and special consideration for publication.
