SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW COMMENTS ON NATO’S NEED TO IMPROVE ITS MILITARY POWER

In a piece published for the Center for European Policy Analysis on March 23rd, Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Gordon “Skip” Davis argues that NATO must readdress its approach for deterrence of Russia. While Davis acknowledges a significant growth in NATO’s military power since 2014, Davis argues that it has proven insufficient to deter Russia as evidenced by Russia’s recent aggression against Ukraine.

As NATO looks forward, it must be able to “defend early and successfully in such a manner that convinces Russian leaders” that they cannot win against the alliance. NATO must increase its investment “in the fundamentals of NATO military power, including posture, structure and forces, readiness, plans and concepts, training and exercises, capabilities, and interoperability.”
