DHS to defend against cyber attacks

According to a department official, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is preparing for its growing role in protecting U.S. critical infrastructure from catastrophic cyber attacks.

Earlier in March, DHS deputy undersecretary for cybersecurity Mark Weatherford, spoke at the Cloud Security Alliance Summit at the RSA conference, saying that it was his goal to “synergize around making DHS the cyber 9-1-1 for the nation.” Weatherford went on to discuss DHS’s National Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Center, its work with the private sector and government agencies, and its efforts to coordinate responses to cyber attacks against agencies, power plants, and other critical infrastructure.

Weatherford also spoke about DHS plans to develop an internal certification program for cybersecurity proficiency that could also be utilized by other agencies, highlighting the growing need for cyber professionals.
