Symposium touts partnership, shared responsibility

On 2-3 December 2013, world leaders gathered in Washington, D.C. for the launch of the Global Fund’s Fourth Replenishment, entitled “No Time to Lose: Sharing the Responsibility to Save Lives.” An initial amount of $12 billion – the largest amount ever committed to the fund – was pledged by 25 countries, as well as the European Commission and various private foundations, corporations, and faith-based organizations. These funding commitments will aid the Global Fund’s fight against AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria over the next three years.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry called on global health partners to embrace all available tools to defeat AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in his remarks at the Global Fund launch, saying that shared responsibility was the only way to succeed. Kerry also went on to say that the Global Fund’s recent reforms “are going to help save more lives, there’s no question.”

In his closing remarks, Mark Dybul, Executive Director of the Global Fund, said that “The 21st century ideals that led to the founding of the Global Fund are now stronger than ever: partnership, shared responsibility, and mutual accountability. In many ways, this is a replenishment of hope. It is a lifting up of the human spirit.”
