USAID office change reflects interagency focus

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced recently that it will be changing the name of the Office of Military Affairs to the Office of Civilian Military Cooperation (CMC). This change reflects the office’s evolving role in facilitating civilian-military cooperation, and better conveys the mission of the office – to improve communication, mutual understanding and cooperation between USAID and the Department of Defense.

USAID seeks to advance the whole of government development agenda by cultivating and maintaining a strong relationship with DoD. USAID and DoD have made much progress toward mutual understanding and coordination in the past five years. This progress is made evident by the placement of Senior USAID advisors in the geographic combatant commands. The Agency’s Bureau for Democracy, Conflict and Humanitarian Assistance (DCHA) and CMC also host military representatives from each command, and DCHA/CMC developed the first USAID civilian-military cooperation policy.

No other organizational changes are intended or implied by this change of name. CMC will remain a part of the DCHA.
