Dempsey touts whole-of-government cooperation

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army General Martin E. Dempsey recently conducted an interview in which he discussed the importance of a whole-of-government approach to issues facing the U.S. and the world. Dempsey has repeatedly pushed for solutions integrating economic, diplomatic, law enforcement, energy, and military instruments of power during his tenure as chairman.

During the interview, Dempsey noted that people are beginning to understand the importance of the whole-of-government approach, saying that there is a greater understanding that conflicts have underlying issues that the military alone cannot address. In these instances, said Dempsey, “The phrase whole-of-government is not just desirable –it’s actually imperative.”

According to Dempsey, experiences in Iraq have helped shape the whole-of-government approach, as the mission in Iraq needed help from several different agencies, including the FBI and intelligence community, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and the departments of State, Treasury, and Energy. Dempsey also spoke on the roles of diplomacy, economic advisors, and law enforcement.
