NIST releases new Community Resilience Planning Guide

In late October, the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) issued the Community Resilience Planning Guide for Buildings and Infrastructure Systems to help U.S. communities better withstand and recover from natural disasters and other hazards.  The guide was developed by NIST with the help of specialists from multiple levels of community and government agencies, service providers, and research institutions.

NIST’s Community Resilience Planning Guide supports FEMA’s recently updated National Preparedness Goal by addressing the role buildings and infrastructure systems play in assuring the health and vitality of the social and economic fabric of the community. The guide offers a six-step planning process for local governments to bring stakeholders together and incorporate resilience into their short- and long-term planning. This planning involves communities and state, regional, and federal agencies, and will enable communities to improve their resilience over time in a way that is cost effective and consistent with their development goals.
