A section from the InterAgency Journal regarding the defense strategic guidance entitled “Sustaining US Global Leadership: Priorities for 21st Century Defense”, released on January 5, 2012 by President Barack Obama and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta. The strategic guidance is intended to reshape DoD priorities, decision making, and budgets to adjust for the projected reduction in spending over the next decade. It also emphasizes a shift in focus towards the Asia-Pacific region, creating a smaller, more agile military; and increasing capabilities in intelligence gathering, special operations, and unmanned systems. The document also explicitly lists ten, loosely prioritized missions to focus on in the near future.
