U.S. pledges humanitarian assistance to South Sudan

On Monday, Secretary of State John Kerry announced that the U.S. will provide nearly $138 million in additional humanitarian assistance to help the South Sudanese people. This brings the total U.S. humanitarian contribution to more than $1.7 billion since the conflict in South Sudan began in December 2013.

The new funding includes emergency health and nutrition services, safe drinking water, nearly 58,000 metric tons of food aid and specialty nutrition products, hygiene supplies, cholera treatment and prevention messaging to stem the current outbreak, and expanded medical and trauma support for survivors of gender-based violence.

The aid will be delivered by USAID’s United Nations and non-governmental partners.
