This article argues for a reorientation and reconsideration of US strategy in Afghanistan, away from a fight against the Taliban towards a fight for the Pashtun population of southern Afghanistan and Pakistan. The article critiques current US and coalition efforts, offers possible reforms to the Afghan National Security Forces, and identifies the central problem in Afghanistan-Pakistan relations: that Pakistani national stability rests on a pliant (or even unstable) Afghanistan. Taking these complex relationships and problems into account is the only way to make headway in this theater of war.
