A section from the InterAgency Journal discussing the findings of a study by the American Academy of Diplomacy and the Stimson Center entitled Forging a 21st-Century Diplomatic Service for the United States through Professional Education and Training. The study addresses the diplomacy/defense imbalance, and recommends a dramatic increase in funding and focus on the development of “smart power” initiatives. The study argues that more education and training, as well as increased hiring, is needed to ensure a successful future for the US Foreign Service and the diplomatic corps.
