PKSOI students see whole-of-government efforts in Haiti

A group of students from the U.S. Army War College’s Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute (PKSOI) recently traveled to Port-au-Prince, Haiti where they saw first-hand the ongoing recovery after the 2010 earthquake that devastated the county.

While in Haiti, the PKSOI students had a front row seat to the whole-of-government coordination required for long-term development efforts. The U.S. government committed $4.2 billion in assistance after the earthquake, and much progress has been made over the years, including advancements in health services, economic growth, and agriculture. However, concerns remain, chief among them being problems with government capacity and vulnerability to natural disasters.

The PKSOI students’ trip is part of an educational partnership between USAID and Department of Defense (DoD)  academic institutions that allows USAID to educate DOD staff on USAID’s mission. The partnership encourages open dialogue on how USAID and DoD can work together to build a more secure and peaceful world.
