September is National Preparedness Month

September 1 marked the beginning of National Preparedness Month, with the theme for 2018 being “Disasters Happen. Prepare Now. Learn How.” National Preparedness Month provides an opportunity to remind us that “we all must prepare ourselves and our families now and throughout the year.”

In her message on National Preparedness Month, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen M. Nielsen emphasized creating a “culture of preparedness” nationwide, saying ” I urge all of you to take the time to evaluate your preparedness and learn how to protect your family so that if disaster strikes, you are ready.”

The goal of National Preparedness Month is to increase the overall number of individuals, families, and communities that engage in preparedness actions. Each week of National Preparedness Month has a different theme:

  • Week 1 (September 1 – 8): Make and Practice Your Plan
  • Week 2 (September 9 – 15): Learn Life Saving Skills
  • Week 3 (September 16 – 22): Check Your Coverage
  • Week 4 (September 23 – 29): Save For an Emergency
