Assist. Secretary testifies on SW border trafficking

Earlier this week Amb. William Brownfield, Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, testified before the United States Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control. Brownfield spoke on U.S. counternarcotics assistance to Mexico, including the Merida Initiative.

In his remarks, Brownfield discussed the U.S. role in the Merida Initiative, a comprehensive U.S.-Mexico security partnership meant to help Mexico’s justice sector counter organized crime, strengthen the rule of law, and protect the shared border from threats, including drug trafficking. Several U.S. government agencies are involved in the Merida Initiative, including the Departments of State and Justice, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Brownfield also spoke about the increase in heroin trafficking, strengthening border security at Mexico’s northern and southern borders, and the efforts to improve information sharing.
