First virtual presentation of the Cold War Symposium ‘Sets the Stage’

The CGSC Foundation’s Simons Center conducted the first of a three part virtual series in the Cold War Symposium on Dec. 14, 2021. This first part was entitled, “Part 1: Setting Stage for the End of the Cold War.” The series kicked off with a dinner event on Nov. 9.

The presenters were:
• Tim Riley, Director and Chief Curator, America’s National Churchill Museum, Fulton, Mo. – Subject: Churchill’s Iron Curtin Speech
• Col. (Ret.) Jon House, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Department of Military History, CGSC – Subject: Cold War Overview
• Robert Davis, Ph.D., Director, Goodpaster Scholars, School of Advanced Military Studies, CGSC – Subject: Conditions Leading to the Decline of the Soviet Union

This virtual meeting was moderated by Lt. Col. (Ret.) John Nelson, Simons Center deputy director and senior research fellow, with comments by Col. (Ret.) Bob Ulin, Simons Center director.

The purpose of the Cold War Symposium is to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the end of the Cold War, to promote scholarship, and to recognize the contributions of those who participated in that global struggle, especially the United States and its allies in NATO. The completion of the symposium will result in publication of a book, edited by Dr. Mark Wilcox, CGSC associate professor, with chapters written by the panel experts.

The next virtual presentation in the series entitled “Part 2: The Cold War Ends” is scheduled for Jan. 11, 2022.
