DHS reports on CVE subcommittee

Earlier this month, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Advisory Council released the Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) Subcommittee interim report. The report focuses on the spread of violent extremist ideology and the recruitment of American youth to extremist groups, and how DHS can leverage partnerships in multiple sectors to counter such recruitment.

The subcommittee’s report asserts that DHS is “significantly under-resourced” to accomplish its goals in stemming online and offline recruitment to extremist violence in the U.S. and offers the Secretary of Homeland Security a clear assessment of what must done in the short and long term.

The report’s key recommendations include developing partnerships with the Departments of State, Education, and Health and Human Services to build new lines of interaction on CVE programs, and strengthening partnerships with state, local, tribal and territorial law enforcement stakeholders to ensure connectivity and coordination on CVE efforts. The report also suggests scaling existing partnerships with non-governmental sector that have already proven successful, and increasing staffing and funding for efforts related to the new CVE task force.
