Tillerson addresses State employees

Yesterday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson addressed State Department employees, speaking about changes and inviting them to “approach this effort that we’re going to undertake with no constraints to your thinking.” This was Tillerson’s second address to State employees since assuming the responsibilities of Secretary of State.

Tillerson spoke about translating President Trump’s “America First” mindset into U.S. foreign policy, saying that a secure and prosperous nation does not necessarily come at the expense of others. He also spoke about many challenges facing the State Department, including efforts to combat ISIS, U.S. relations with Russia, and transnational organized crime in Central and South America.

In his address, Tillerson stressed the value of State’s efforts and their role in securing the U.S., saying “The National Security Council really values the work that we provide in the interagency process.” He did not remark on the Trump administration’s proposed budget, which calls for cuts to the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development.
